
Introduction Charsadda derives its name from headquarters town. Formerly , it was a tehsil of Peshawar district and was upgraded to the status of district in July, 1988. At the time of Alexander's invasion Charsadda was known as Pushkalavati (The Lotus). It was the capital of the region. The Greek historians transliterated it as Peukelaus or Peukelatois. Ptolemy fies its site upon the eastern bank of the Suastene or Swat river. In the seventh century A.D. Hiuen Tsiang over the spot where Budha made alms offeringof his eyes, formedthe great attraction for the Budhist pilgrims. However, it had been abandoned as a political capital in favour of Peshawar. Location The district lies between 34-03' and 34-38' north latitudes and 71-28' and 71-53' east longitudes. Boundary It is bounded by Malakand district on the north. Mardan district on the east, Nowshera and Peshawar districts on the south and Mohmand Agency on the west. Area The area of the district is 996 square kilometers. Population (According to Census 1998)
