Introduction
The district takes its name from the headquarters town of Gujrat. This town grew up around a fort established by the emperor Akbar in A.D. 1580 with the help of the Gujar inhabitants of the neighbouring areas. Its shape is roughly that of a parallelogram. If forms northern most portion of the Ghaj Doaba lying between the Jhelun and chenab rivers.
Location
The district lies between north latitudes 32° 19' to 33° 03' and east longitudes 73° 31' to 74° 28'.
Boundary
It is bounded on the north-east by districts Mirpur and Bhimber of Azad Jammu and Kashmir, on the north-west by the river Jhelum, which seperates it from Jhelum district, on the south-east by the river Chenab, seperating it from the districts of Gujranwala and Sialkot, on the east by the river Tawi, which seperates it from the Sialkot district and on the south-west by MandiBahauddin district.

According to Survey of Pakistan, its area is 3,192 square kilometers.
