The devastating and deadly floods have affected millions of people in Pakistan, as the flash floods mixed with the deadly waves of mighty Indus have led to the unprecedented and catastrophic conditions. This calls for an urgent intervention in terms of providing food and other relief items to avoid further human losses and rehabilitating them.
Looking at this devastating, dismal and depressing scenario, DTCE BoDs had decided to intervene in the districts, where the floods have affected the previous lives and properties. Some of the affected areas were ranged in the raking category of poorest of the poor. DTCE’s already ongoing program intervention for the support and funding of socially excluded and marginalized communities, mainly could help in terms of availability of funds to meet part of this challenge.
DTCE was cognizant of the fact that in the absence of elected Local Government representatives at the grassroots level, intensive and inclusive linkages created through those electedrepresentatives were missing. This missing link was activated by involving DTCE citizen engagement forums that includes LCAs, Press Clubs, Bar Associations, CCB Networks, V&NCs and CSOs, which had strong linkages with the communities throughout the country.
Initially some thirteen districts were selected that includes Charsada, Nowshera, Lower Dir, Kohistan, Muzaffargarh, RYK, Sukker, Khairpur, Thatta, Jacobabad, Shadadkot, Naseerabad and DeraMuradJamali. These areas were dynamic in response to emerging needs. Committees comprising of members from LCAs, Press Clubs, Bar Associations, CCB Networks, V&NCs and CSOs were formed in the districts. Assessments were made and based on these assessment affectees list were finalized by the committees.
The flood relief activities were under taken on a limited scale in Muzaffargarh, Multan, Naseerabad, Jaffarabad, Shehdadkot, Thatta, Sukkur, Khairpur, Shikarpur, Kohistan and Charsadda. 62719 members of 8980 families (Punjab 1890 families, Baluchistan 1500 families, Sindh 2650 and KP 2940 families) were supported through DTCE flood relief program. Print and electronic media was also invited in all the food distribution events for monitoring and reporting purposes. |
